Bank Holidays for Pongal and Makar Sankranti
The festive season is upon us, and with it comes the joy of celebration as various regions in India prepare for their winter and harvest festivals. In Tamil Nadu, banks will observe four consecutive holidays next week, a significant event for the local populace as they celebrate Pongal and Makar Sankranti. These holidays are crucial for planning financial activities and ensuring that all banking needs are met ahead of time.
According to the RBI Bank Holiday calendar, the bank holidays in Tamil Nadu will span from January 12 to 18. The closures are primarily due to regional observances, which means that not all banks across India will be closed for the same duration. This unique arrangement allows for a rich tapestry of celebrations across the country, where different states honor their local traditions.
On January 12, banks in West Bengal will be closed in observance of Swami Vivekananda's birthday. Following this, on January 14, banks in states like Gujarat, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam will shut down for Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu. The celebrations will continue with bank closures on January 15 in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Sikkim for Uttarayana Punyakala, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, and Makara Sankranti.
January 16 is significant in Tamil Nadu as banks will be closed in observance of Thiruvalluvar Day, a day dedicated to the revered Tamil poet and philosopher. The last holiday in this streak will occur on January 17 due to Uzhavar Thirunal, adding to the festive spirit of the region. Finally, banks will close nationwide on January 18 for the weekly Sunday off.
With a total of 16 bank holidays in January 2026, it’s essential for residents to be aware of these dates. Customers should plan their banking activities accordingly to avoid any inconvenience during this festive period. Whether it’s withdrawing cash for celebrations or making important transactions, being informed can help in managing finances smoothly.
As the festivities bring joy and togetherness, it’s also a reminder to keep an eye on banking schedules. Enjoy the celebrations, and don’t forget to plan ahead!
