BCCI's New Guidelines: Shastri's Take on Chefs and Focus

19 Oct, 2025

Following India's recent defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced stringent guidelines aimed at players. These guidelines primarily focus on the duration of stay for family members and the number of personal staff allowed on tours. Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri shared his thoughts on this matter, humorously stating that he wouldn't have minded having a chef accompany the team to enjoy a variety of cuisines.

Shastri expressed that having a chef could have made the touring experience more enjoyable, particularly when players get tired of room service meals. He highlighted how, during tours, the presence of too many people can lead to distractions, emphasizing the need for focus. Shastri’s comments reflect a light-hearted take on the serious nature of professional sports, where maintaining discipline is vital.

Moreover, Gautam Gambhir, the current head coach, stood in support of the BCCI's decision to limit family presence during tours. In a discussion ahead of the Lord’s Test against England, he pointed out that while families play a crucial role in a player's life, the primary purpose of being on tour is to represent the country. Gambhir reiterated that players should prioritize their commitment to the national team over personal comforts.

He remarked, “You’ve got very few people in that dressing room who get this opportunity to make the country proud.” This sentiment underlines the significance of being mentally prepared and focused during high-stakes matches. Gambhir also emphasized the necessity of having a strong bench of fast bowlers, especially with key players like Shami retiring and Bumrah's workload management becoming a concern.

Both Shastri and Gambhir's perspectives highlight the fine balance players must maintain between personal life and professional responsibilities. As cricket continues to evolve, these guidelines aim to ensure that players remain committed and focused, ultimately striving for excellence and national pride on the field.
