Bengaluru's Blue Line Metro to Airport by 2027
Bengaluru's much-awaited Blue Line of Namma Metro is finally on track for completion by December 2027. This project will connect the bustling Central Silk Board Junction to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), making travel more convenient for residents and visitors alike.
The Blue Line spans a total of 58.19 kilometers and is being developed in two phases. Phase 2A covers a stretch of 19.75 kilometers between Central Silk Board and Krishnarajapura (K.R. Pura), while Phase 2B extends for 38.44 kilometers from KR Pura to the airport. As of June 30, 2025, the civil works have made significant progress, reaching 52.5% completion, according to reports by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
The construction activity on the airport-bound section accelerated following a nine-month pause in 2023 due to a tragic incident at HBR Layout. In addition, two stations are being developed within the airport boundaries by the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL). The Airport City station will be at ground level, while the Airport Terminal station is designed as a semi-underground facility, located approximately seven to eight meters below the surface.
One of the exciting features of the Blue Line is the introduction of driverless trains equipped with luggage racks and advanced safety systems, specifically designed to cater to the needs of air travelers. The planning phase for this line began nearly ten years ago, with the detailed project report for the Central Silk Board–K.R. Pura stretch submitted in October 2016 and approved by the State Cabinet in March 2017.
The overall cost for both phases of the project is estimated to be around ₹14,788 crore. Recently, BMRCL's new Managing Director, J. Ravishankar, conducted a review of construction progress along the airport corridor between KIA and Hebbal. His inspection included critical components such as the viaduct, station works, and the upcoming depot at Shettigere.
Officials stressed that the review focused on timely delivery, safety standards compliance, and the creation of world-class infrastructure. Once operational, this Blue Line will provide a direct link from Bengaluru's southern, eastern, and northern suburbs to the airport, significantly easing travel across multiple corridors and enhancing the city's overall connectivity.
