BJP's First Year in Delhi: Achievements and Challenges

20 Feb, 2026

The BJP's first year in Delhi has been a blend of successes and ongoing challenges. As the party marks this milestone, it reflects on various sectors that have seen significant developments. One of the most pressing issues has been air pollution, which continues to impact daily life in the capital. Fortunately, political alignment between Delhi and its neighboring BJP-governed states, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, has led to better coordination in addressing regional pollution control measures. This includes joint planning for public transport and actions against non-compliant vehicles.

Water management is another critical area where the BJP government has focused its efforts. Although the reliability of water supply remains inconsistent in various localities, policy announcements and inter-governmental cooperation have paved the way for planned investments in this sector. With a vision for sustainable water distribution, the government is working towards long-term solutions.

The transport sector has also seen tangible outcomes due to government actions. Infrastructure upgrades have made public transport more efficient, which is crucial for a city grappling with traffic congestion. This effort aligns with the party's broader agenda of promoting electric vehicles to reduce pollution.

Healthcare has been among the most notable sectors for policy implementation. One of the government's first major decisions was to launch the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi, providing a ₹5 lakh state-funded top-up, effectively doubling health insurance coverage to ₹10 lakh per family. This initiative has expanded access to treatment across both government and private hospitals, significantly improving healthcare services in the capital.

In education, the government has introduced several initiatives, including the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Act, 2025. This act aims to regulate private school fees and enhance transparency in the education system. However, large structural reforms in this sector are still in their infancy.

Overall, the BJP's first year in Delhi has been characterized by visible expansions in welfare schemes, healthcare insurance, and infrastructure planning. The government has also improved its coordination with the Centre. However, it continues to face the challenge of implementing long-term structural reforms effectively, particularly in water distribution, pollution reduction, education expansion, and healthcare capacity upgrades.
