Boosting EV Sales: India’s Path to 2030

10 Sep, 2025

India is currently facing a critical challenge in its electric vehicle (EV) sector. According to a recent report by NITI Aayog, the country needs to increase its EV sales by more than 22% over the next five years to achieve a target of 30% EV penetration by 2030. Despite positive policy support and a growing awareness among consumers, EVs constituted only about 7.6% of total vehicle sales in 2024.

This slow progress highlights the need for stronger measures to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. While the sales of EVs in India have seen significant growth, jumping from 50,000 units in 2016 to 2.08 million units in 2024, the country still lags behind leaders like the US, European Union, and China.

The report points out that India has performed relatively well in segments such as electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, with notable advancements in electric buses. However, the adoption of electric cars remains sluggish, and the market for long-haul electric trucks is virtually non-existent.

To address these challenges, the report calls for a comprehensive approach that includes moving from incentives to mandates and disincentives. It suggests that incentives alone have largely achieved their intended impact, and stronger regulatory signals are now needed for the next stage of growth.

Additionally, the report recommends focusing on specific subsets of the vehicle fleet where the transition benefits can be maximized and where a supportive ecosystem can be more easily developed. By concentrating efforts in limited geographical areas, visible impacts can be created, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other regions.

In conclusion, as India gears up for a greener future, the path to achieving the ambitious EV targets set for 2030 requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders. With the right strategies and regulatory frameworks, the country can not only meet its goals but also position itself as a leader in the electric vehicle revolution.
