Bumrah's 100th T20I Wicket Sparks Controversy

Jasprit Bumrah's 100th T20I wicket during the first match against South Africa in Cuttack became a subject of controversy. The incident unfolded on the second ball of the 11th over when Bumrah bowled a short ball to Dewald Brevis. With South Africa struggling for runs, Brevis attempted a shot but top-edged the ball to Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav. However, the dismissal was contested after replays raised questions about the legality of Bumrah's delivery.

As Brevis began to walk back, the on-field umpire halted him for a review over a potential no-ball. The third umpire, KN Anantha Padmanabhan, ultimately ruled that Bumrah's delivery was legal, indicating that his foot was behind the line. Yet, replays suggested that Bumrah's foot may have marginally crossed the line, prompting former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar and ex-Zimbabwean cricketer Pommie Mbangwa to express their discontent with the decision.

Mbangwa commented, "Can't see anything behind the line, and that means he is over it," which added to the skepticism surrounding the call. Although a different angle of the replay was shown later, it failed to clearly capture Bumrah's foot position, as other Indian players obscured the view.

Former cricketer Deep Dasgupta, also commentating during the match, explained that in situations where visuals are unclear, the benefit of the doubt usually favors the bowler. Despite the ongoing controversy, Bumrah managed to secure two wickets in the match, including Brevis and Keshav Maharaj, leading India to a comfortable victory.

South Africa was bowled out for a mere 74 runs in their chase of India's 175/6. With this achievement, Bumrah became the second Indian bowler to reach the milestone of 100 T20I wickets, following in the footsteps of Arshdeep Singh.
