Bumrah’s Workload: Stats That Silence Critics
Jasprit Bumrah, India's ace fast bowler, has been under fire for his workload management, especially after a limited role in the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. However, Balvinder Singh Sandhu, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, has come forward to defend him. Sandhu argues that the scrutiny Bumrah faces is unfair, especially when compared to star batsmen who often take breaks without facing the same criticism.
In a revealing article, Sandhu presents alarming statistics: Bumrah has averaged just 3.2 days of rest for every match over the last seven years. In contrast, fellow fast bowlers like Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami have slightly more rest, at 3.5 and 3.7 days, respectively. This data highlights the brutal nature of fast bowling, which often goes unappreciated by fans and critics alike.
Sandhu questions why the same level of scrutiny isn't applied to batsmen who take breaks. He points out that injuries have plagued both Shami and Siraj, indicating that the physical demands on fast bowlers are exceptionally high. “Fast bowling is brutal,” he emphasizes, underscoring the need for adequate rest and recovery.
Reflecting on his time working with Bumrah at the National Cricket Academy, Sandhu admitted he was initially skeptical about Bumrah's longevity given the demands of fast bowling. However, he praised Bumrah's commitment to fitness and skill development, which has allowed him to perform at a high level despite the physical toll on his body.
Sandhu also explained the unique biomechanics of Bumrah's bowling action, which generates pace from strength rather than a long run-up. This places additional stress on his muscles, making injuries more likely. He compared Bumrah to cricket legends like Kapil Dev and Wasim Akram, who had smoother bowling actions yet also faced injuries in their careers.
As Bumrah prepares to return to action in the upcoming Asia Cup, Sandhu urges fans to appreciate the skill and dedication of fast bowlers. Instead of criticizing them for taking breaks, supporters should enjoy the incredible performances these athletes bring to the game whenever they are fit to play.
