These chatbots remember user interactions, allowing them to offer personalized responses. For instance, Google’s Personal Intelligence feature can pull data from a user’s Gmail, Photos, and YouTube, making interactions feel more relevant.

However, this memory capability raises important questions, especially in the Indian context. An individual named Del Rosario highlighted how a chatbot’s constant reminder of his weight loss journey felt intrusive. Whenever he sought restaurant recommendations, the chatbot would bring up his goal to lose weight, making him uncomfortable. Such reminders can be distressing, particularly for those already struggling with body image issues.

In a country like India, where mental health awareness is gradually improving, the potential for chatbots to inadvertently reinforce negative thoughts is a significant concern. Imagine a user who has shared their anxiety with a chatbot. Months later, being reminded of that anxiety can trigger distress, making it harder for them to move on. Chatbots are designed to be agreeable and supportive, but this can lead to unintended consequences.

Experts like Osler argue that chatbots' tendency to build on a user’s version of reality may inadvertently reinforce delusional thinking. When users are repeatedly reminded of their challenges, it can solidify those feelings instead of providing the support they might need to overcome them.
