Chennai Schools ClosedDue to Cyclone Ditwah Alert

01 Dec, 2025

As Cyclone Ditwah intensifies over the southwest Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for coastal Tamil Nadu. This alert predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 1, prompting precautionary measures by the state government.

In light of the impending storm, schools and educational institutions in Chennai, along with districts such as Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur, will remain closed. This decision aims to ensure the safety of students amidst warnings of severe waterlogging and intense rainfall due to the cyclone.

The Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday for all educational institutions as a proactive step. This closure impacts students from government, private, and aided schools, reinforcing the importance of student safety during extreme weather conditions.

The IMD has placed several districts under heightened alert, indicating a serious weather situation. Alongside the orange alert, a yellow alert is also in effect for other areas, including Villuppuram, Cuddalore, and Thanjavur, where isolated heavy rainfall is expected.

Puducherry is also preparing for heavy rains, with the Education Minister announcing the closure of both government and private schools in the region on December 1. This reflects a coordinated effort across state lines to prioritize safety amid the cyclone's impact.

Moreover, the IMD has issued warnings to fishermen along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. Squally winds are expected to reach speeds of 55-65 kmph, with gusts up to 75 kmph, although conditions are anticipated to improve as the day progresses.

As residents of Tamil Nadu remain vigilant, they are advised to stay updated on weather reports and local advisories. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, providing timely updates to ensure public safety. Cyclone Ditwah serves as a reminder of the need for preparedness during monsoon seasons, especially for coastal communities.
