Cook Urges Stokes to Address England Team's Issues

10 Dec, 2025

Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook has voiced his concerns regarding the current state of the England cricket team during the 2025-26 Ashes series. With England trailing 2-0, Cook believes that captain Ben Stokes must confront his players with some "home truths." After witnessing Stokes’s frustration following the second Test loss, Cook emphasized that the captain cannot be expected to perform under pressure all the time.

Cook remarked, "For the first time in his captaincy career, some home truths are going to be said to players." He highlighted that Stokes is tired of seeing his teammates not meet their potential. Cook added that while Stokes consistently delivers results, it’s unreasonable to expect him to do so alone. "That’s impossible," he stated, pointing out the need for other players to step up.

Additionally, Cook noted that Stokes is now looking for support from his fellow batsmen. He commented on the emotional toll that defeats take on a captain, mentioning that Stokes bears more weight than others in the team. "He wants other people to do it," Cook said, suggesting that Stokes might face uncomfortable moments in the dressing room as he addresses the team's performance.

Former teammate Sir James Anderson also weighed in, acknowledging that the players are aware of their shortcomings. He stated, "You have to take criticism. That’s part of the job." Anderson emphasized that players know they haven’t performed well enough and expect to face criticism, especially during an Ashes series. The emotional impact of the defeats is real, and many players will be feeling the pressure.

As the team prepares for the third Test match in Adelaide on December 17, the focus will be on whether Stokes can inspire his players to rise to the occasion. The upcoming match presents a crucial opportunity for England to regroup and demonstrate their capabilities on the international stage.
