Cyclone Alert: Heavy Rainfall Expected in Southern India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised an alert as a low-pressure area has formed over the Strait of Malacca and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. This system is likely to intensify into a depression around November 24, 2025. Given the potential for a cyclone developing over the Bay of Bengal, the IMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in several states and Union territories.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from November 22 to 27, with especially intense downpours on November 24 and 25. Tamil Nadu is also on alert for heavy rainfall from November 22 to 25, while Kerala and Mahe can expect significant rainfall from November 22 to 26. The Lakshadweep islands will see heavy rain on November 22 and 23, and Rayalaseema will experience heavy rain on November 22.
The IMD’s weather bulletin indicates that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will face "heavy to very heavy rainfall" on November 22 and 23, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. As the system progresses, the intensity of rainfall is expected to increase on November 24 and 25, prompting further warnings.
Travelers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, including Port Blair and Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), should take the IMD’s warnings seriously as the islands are likely to experience localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Adventure activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, and kayaking may be restricted during peak rainfall phases, and beaches may face higher-than-normal waves, making swimming unsafe.
For those booked on boat trips to popular destinations like Elephant Beach, Ross Island, and North Bay, staying informed about local marine advisories is crucial, as weather conditions can impact boat departures. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into certain waters, including the Arabian Sea along the Kerala coast and the Bay of Bengal, from November 22 to 27.
In summary, it is essential to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and advisories during this period of potential severe weather. Safety should be the priority for all residents and travelers in the affected regions.
