Delay in Lalbaugcha Raja Immersion Shocks Devotees

08 Sep, 2025

The immersion of Mumbai's iconic Lalbaugcha Raja idol faced an unexpected delay this year, with the idol being immersed in the Arabian Sea at 9:15 p.m. instead of the customary early morning time. This unusual 13-hour delay raised eyebrows among devotees who eagerly awaited the arrival of the idol at Girgaon Chowpatty.

Typically, the idol is immersed by 9 a.m., but this year, high tides of 4.42 meters and various technical issues caused significant setbacks. Officials reported that the immersion process began around 8 a.m., but it was soon evident that the conditions were not favorable for a timely immersion.

As thousands of devotees gathered on the beach, chants of “Lalbaugcha Rajacha Vijay Aso” filled the air, creating an atmosphere of fervent devotion. However, the high tide made it difficult to maneuver the raft carrying the idol. The raft began to float due to the rising water levels between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., complicating the immersion process further.

Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal’s honorary secretary, Sudhir Salavi, explained that the immersion procession faced delays of 10-15 minutes, which significantly impacted the planned timeline. Initial attempts to immerse the idol were unsuccessful, leading to a decision to wait for the tide to recede.

Local fishermen played a crucial role in advising the mandal on the best course of action, suggesting that the raft would be able to float properly during the next high tide. Despite the delays, the determination of the volunteers and fishermen shone through as they worked tirelessly to stabilize the raft for the immersion.

After several attempts failed, the idol was finally moved to a newly constructed raft with the help of hundreds of volunteers at around 4:45 p.m. The patience and perseverance of everyone involved were met with wild cheers from the crowd, highlighting the community spirit surrounding this significant event.

The immersion of Lalbaugcha Raja is not just a ritual; it is an embodiment of Mumbai’s cultural heritage, drawing thousands of devotees from across the city. This year’s delay serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the challenges faced during such grand celebrations. The devotion of the people remains unwavering, as they come together to honor their beloved Ganpati Bappa.
