Delhi Shopkeeper Killed Over Cigarette Dispute

27 Nov, 2025

A tragic incident in Delhi has brought to light the alarming issue of youth violence. A 40-year-old shopkeeper, Rajender Kumar, was stabbed to death over a dispute regarding free cigarettes at his paan shop in West Patel Nagar. This shocking event unfolded on a Sunday night, leading to a serious escalation of what could have been an ordinary disagreement.

According to police reports, the group of attackers, including five minors, allegedly approached the shopkeeper after consuming alcohol and demanded free cigarette packets. When Rajender Kumar refused to comply and asked for payment instead, a quarrel erupted. In a fit of rage, the group stabbed him multiple times, leading to his death shortly after being admitted to RML Hospital.

The police acted swiftly, analyzing CCTV footage from the area to identify the assailants. The main accused, Md Mehtab alias Raja, a 19-year-old resident of Farid Puri, was arrested after a brief exchange of gunfire with the police. This incident raises serious concerns about the increasing involvement of minors in violent crimes, particularly in urban settings where such incidents are becoming all too common.

Moreover, the five minors apprehended were identified as school dropouts who had previously engaged in thefts and robberies. This troubling trend emphasizes the need for better educational and recreational opportunities for youth in these communities to prevent them from turning to crime.

Following the arrest of Mehtab, police recovered two knives used in the crime, along with a country-made pistol and ammunition. This recovery illustrates the potential dangers posed by such groups operating in the city. The investigation continues as authorities aim to address not only this particular crime but also the broader issues of youth violence and public safety.

As the local community grapples with this loss, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for initiatives focusing on youth engagement and crime prevention. Addressing the roots of such violence is critical for ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens in urban India.
