Delhi's Air Quality Crisis: Very Poor AQI Levels

13 Dec, 2025

Delhi is currently facing a significant air quality crisis, with several areas recording alarming levels of pollution. On Tuesday, regions like Ashok Vihar and Bawana reported AQI levels of 305 and 342, categorizing them as 'Very Poor'. Other areas, including Anand Vihar and Chandani Chowk, also showed similarly concerning figures, indicating a widespread issue that affects the health of residents.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classifies air quality based on the Air Quality Index (AQI). Levels between 301 and 400 are classified as 'Very Poor', where prolonged exposure can severely impact health. Meanwhile, areas around India Gate and Kartavya Path are struggling with 'Poor' air quality, with an AQI of around 265.

As the pollution levels rise, citizens are becoming increasingly concerned. On November 23, protests erupted against the deteriorating air quality, leading to the arrest of several demonstrators. A Delhi court is expected to rule on bail pleas for those arrested during these protests. Many of the arrested are students, and their lawyers argue that with exams approaching, bail is urgently needed.

In addition to Delhi, neighboring Mumbai also experienced a layer of haze, but its AQI was reported at 170, categorized as 'Moderate' according to the CPCB. This highlights the varying levels of pollution across different cities in India.

As the situation in Delhi continues to worsen, it is crucial for authorities to take immediate action to improve air quality. The health of millions is at stake, and addressing this issue should be a top priority. With protests signaling public unrest, there is an urgent need for effective policies and measures to combat air pollution and safeguard the well-being of all residents.
