Delhi's Atal Canteens Reopen After LPG Crisis
The Atal Canteens in Delhi have resumed operations after being temporarily closed due to an LPG shortage. This closure, which occurred on Saturday evening, raised concerns about the welfare of the city's underprivileged population who rely on these canteens for affordable meals. These canteens, part of a flagship social welfare initiative by the Delhi government, provide wholesome thali meals for just Rs 5.
The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), responsible for managing the Atal Canteens, highlighted the urgent need for a consistent supply of cooking gas. Following this, the Department of Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs responded promptly, assuring DUSIB that the scheme would be prioritized for LPG supply.
By Tuesday, the canteens in Nehru Nagar, Kalkaji, Anna Nagar, and RK Puram reopened, serving meals to hundreds of people. Data collected through face recognition technology confirmed that around 23,400 meals were served citywide that day. This technology not only helps in keeping track of visitors but also ensures accountability in meal distribution.
The commitment of the Delhi government to support its vulnerable population is evident, as they work to guarantee that such disruptions do not occur in the future. A senior official mentioned that arrangements have been made to secure a reliable LPG connection for the canteens, ensuring smooth operations.
Inaugurated on December 25, the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, these canteens aim to provide dignity in meals for the underprivileged. The initiative reflects the government’s intention to ensure that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has access to nutritious food. The canteens serve a variety of meals, including rice, roti, dal, vegetables, and pickles, from 11:30 AM to 2 PM for lunch and 6:30 PM to 9 PM for dinner.
As these canteens reopen, they not only serve meals but also symbolize hope and support for many in need. The government’s proactive measures to address the LPG supply issue demonstrate a commitment to social welfare and the well-being of its citizens.
