Delhi's Free LPG Cylinder Scheme for EWS This Holi

21 Jan, 2026

This Holi, the Delhi government is preparing to launch a noteworthy initiative aimed at supporting the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) by providing free LPG cylinders. This scheme is part of the promises made by the BJP during the Delhi Assembly elections, demonstrating a commitment to assist low-income households.

At a recent cabinet meeting, the Delhi government approved a budget allocation of Rs 300 crore for this scheme. The initiative is designed to help families during the festive season, easing their financial burdens while ensuring they have access to essential cooking fuel.

According to government sources, the scheme will benefit all ration card holders from the EWS category, which includes approximately 17.18 lakh registered households in Delhi. The government aims to promote transparency by implementing direct benefit transfers to the bank accounts linked to the Aadhaar numbers of eligible beneficiaries.

This method is expected to prevent misuse of the scheme, as officials noted that there have been instances of individuals selling free cylinders on the black market. By ensuring that only eligible households receive benefits, the government hopes to maintain integrity and support those who genuinely need assistance.

Moreover, the government is still working on fulfilling another promise made to provide LPG cylinders at a subsidized price of Rs 500 to women from economically disadvantaged families. This aspect of the plan requires updated data on eligible candidates, and efforts are underway to finalize the criteria.

As the launch of the free LPG cylinder scheme approaches, many Delhi residents are looking forward to this initiative with hope. It is expected to bring relief to numerous families during the Holi celebrations, reinforcing the government's commitment to uplifting the EWS community and ensuring their access to essential services.
