Devdutt Padikkal: Rising Star in Indian Cricket

08 Jan, 2026

Devdutt Padikkal, a talented cricketer from India, is creating a buzz in the domestic cricket scene with his remarkable performances. Recently, he has shown exceptional skill in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored impressive runs and maintained a high average. As the Indian selection committee prepares for the ODI squad for the New Zealand series, Padikkal reflects on the challenges of breaking into a strong team filled with established players.

Despite his outstanding statistics, including an average of 83.62 in List A matches, Padikkal understands the reality of competition. He is aware that many talented batters are vying for a spot, and it's not easy to make the cut. After a recent match where he scored 91 runs against Rajasthan, he expressed his perspective, saying, “I wouldn’t say it was disappointing. I understand that there are so many batters in line, and everyone has been doing really well.”

Since making his debut in the IPL in 2020, Padikkal has transformed from an opener struggling in the T20 format to a consistent middle-order batsman. His journey has not been without hurdles; he faced challenges in previous IPL seasons but has rebounded with impressive performances, particularly in the last season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Padikkal credits his growth to the guidance he received from experienced players like Dinesh Karthik and Andy Flower at RCB. He acknowledges that adjusting his game for the T20 format was a significant challenge but has ultimately enhanced his skills. “The way they helped me understand how I can maximize my game in the T20 format helped me a lot,” he shares.

In the 50-over format, where many new-age batsmen struggle with tempo, Padikkal has found his rhythm early in his career. He emphasizes that building innings and adapting to match situations have been key to his success. As he looks to the future, he aims for a position in the Test team and dreams of winning prestigious tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.

Padikkal remains focused on his goal of becoming a permanent member of the Indian side. “I understand that there is a lot of competition. All I can do is keep scoring runs and wait for my chance,” he concludes, showing determination and resilience as he navigates his cricketing journey.
