DGCA's New Flight Ticket Refund Rules Explained

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recently introduced new flight ticket refund rules that aim to enhance the travel experience for passengers in India. These rules come as a relief for travelers who often face challenges when their plans change unexpectedly. Under the new regulations, passengers can now cancel or amend their tickets without incurring additional charges within a 48-hour window after booking. This policy allows travelers to modify their plans without the fear of losing money.

Moreover, if a traveler mistakenly enters the wrong name during booking, they can correct it without any extra fees, provided they do so within 24 hours. This is particularly beneficial for those who might be in a rush when booking their flights. The rule applies to tickets booked directly through the airline's website, ensuring that passengers have a straightforward way to rectify mistakes.

In terms of refunds, the DGCA mandates that airlines process refunds promptly. For tickets booked with a credit card, refunds must be issued within seven days of cancellation. For cash transactions, refunds should be immediate at the airline office. This ensures that travelers are not left in limbo waiting for their money to be returned.

Additionally, the DGCA has made it a requirement for airlines to clearly display cancellation charges at the time of booking. This transparency helps passengers understand whether they are booking a refundable or non-refundable fare and how much they might lose if they need to cancel.

Furthermore, airlines are now restricted from charging cancellation fees that exceed the basic fare plus fuel surcharge. This ensures that travelers are not subjected to exorbitant fees during unfortunate cancellations.

On another note, the DGCA has directed airlines to make a larger percentage of seats available for selection without additional charges. This is a significant move that addresses the common issue of families being forced to sit apart due to high seat selection fees. Airlines are now required to offer at least 60% of their seats without charge, allowing families to sit together more easily.

While these directives are not yet formal rules, they signal a positive shift towards improving passenger experience in Indian aviation. It remains to be seen if these guidelines will be made into binding regulations in the future, but for now, they pave the way for a more customer-friendly flying environment.
