ED Raids Expose Luxury Car Smuggling in South India

08 Oct, 2025

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has recently intensified its operations against luxury vehicle smuggling in South India, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The agency conducted raids at 17 different locations, which included residences of film personalities, luxury car owners, and auto dealers. This investigation is part of a broader effort to tackle alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), revealing the intricate details of a high-profile smuggling racket.

Among those under scrutiny are well-known actors such as Prithviraj and Dulquer Salmaan, with their properties being searched as part of the operation. Officials have indicated that the ED’s Kochi Zonal Office is behind these extensive searches, which have been made possible by intelligence inputs that uncovered a syndicate involved in the illegal importation and registration of luxury vehicles like Land Cruisers and Maseratis.

Preliminary reports suggest that a network based in Coimbatore has been using forged documents to facilitate these illegal activities. These documents allegedly claimed to originate from the Indian Army and the US Embassy, which were then utilized to obtain fraudulent vehicle registrations from various Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across India. This operation has shed light on the darker side of luxury car ownership, exposing how high-net-worth individuals, including celebrities, may have inadvertently participated in these illegal dealings.

In a notable development, Dulquer Salmaan is currently navigating legal challenges regarding his Land Rover Defender, which was seized during the crackdown dubbed 'Operation Numkhor.' He has been directed by the Kerala High Court to apply for the provisional release of his vehicle, asserting that he believed the ownership documents were legitimate. The court has instructed Customs authorities to resolve this matter promptly, indicating the urgency and significance of the ongoing investigation.

This unfolding situation raises critical questions about the authenticity of luxury vehicle registrations in India and highlights the potential implications for those involved, both legally and reputationally. As the ED continues its investigation, there is a growing concern about the prevalence of such illegal activities and the impact they may have on the glamour surrounding luxury cars in Indian society.
