Starting this month, major FMCG companies like Hindustan Unilever, Godrej Consumer, and Tata Consumer are raising prices on everyday items such as tea, edible oil, soap, and skin cream by 5-20%.
This marks the most significant price hike in a year, driven by increased commodity costs and higher import duties. For instance, the import duty on edible oil rose by 22% in September, contributing to a 40% increase over the year. Companies hope consumers can absorb these costs, though analysts worry about the impact on already stressed urban demand.
