Fog Disrupts Travel in North India

13 Jan, 2026

North India is currently experiencing a thick blanket of fog, significantly disrupting daily life and travel. This weather phenomenon has particularly affected Delhi, where visibility dropped to around 100 meters early Wednesday morning. As a result, at least ten flights were cancelled and more than 270 were delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that visibility is expected to improve to 400 meters by 8:30 AM, as fog conditions are predicted to ease. However, air quality in Delhi remains a pressing concern, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 349, categorizing it as 'very poor.' Residents woke up to a thick fog that has become a common sight during the winter months.

Train services also faced delays, adding to the inconvenience for passengers. Many travelers at the New Delhi railway station expressed frustration as they waited for their trains. The IMD has issued alerts for several regions, warning of continued cold wave conditions.

In Uttar Pradesh, cities like Ayodhya and Kanpur are under yellow alerts due to dense fog. The minimum temperatures in these areas are expected to hover around 10 to 11 degrees Celsius, further intensifying the cold wave. The iconic Taj Mahal in Agra, however, was visible after days of foggy conditions, bringing joy to visitors who had been waiting to see the monument without obstruction.

In Punjab and Haryana, regions like Ambala continue to grapple with fog, while Moga has reported slight improvements in visibility as the fog lifted. The IMD's forecasts indicate that visibility might temporarily improve throughout the day, but the cold wave is likely to persist.

As North India copes with these weather challenges, the impact on daily life is palpable. With travel plans disrupted and health concerns rising due to poor air quality, residents are advised to exercise caution and stay updated with the latest weather reports.
