Foreign Investment in Indian Stocks Hits 12-Year Low as Mutual Funds Reach Record Levels

Foreign investors' share in Indian equities has plunged to a 12-year low, dropping below 16% in October 2024.

Their assets under custody in equities fell sharply by 8.8% to Rs 71.08 lakh crore, down from Rs 77.96 lakh crore in September—the biggest decline since March 2020, according to NSDL data. In contrast, mutual funds hit a record-high stake of 9.58% with assets valued at Rs 42.36 lakh crore. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) held Rs 76.80 lakh crore at the end of September, with a 16.2% stake in NSE-listed companies.
