Fuel Prices Surge Again: A 5-Day Spike

The recent hike in fuel prices in India has left many citizens concerned about rising living costs. Over the past five days, petrol and diesel rates have surged nearly ₹4 per litre across the nation. In Delhi, petrol is now priced at ₹98.64 per litre, while diesel has reached ₹91.58. Major cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai have also experienced significant increases, with petrol prices hitting ₹109.70 in Kolkata and ₹107.59 in Mumbai.

The reason behind this hike can be attributed to the rising global energy prices, which have been impacted by geopolitical issues, particularly the ongoing conflict in West Asia. With India importing more than 88 percent of the crude oil it processes and paying for it in dollars, any fluctuations in global oil prices directly affect domestic fuel rates.

The three state-run oil marketing companies, namely Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, which dominate over 90 percent of the domestic fuel retail market, have revised their prices simultaneously. This coordinated action indicates the significant influence these companies have on fuel pricing in the country.

As fuel prices continue to rise, the implications are far-reaching. Higher fuel costs can lead to increased transportation expenses, affecting the prices of goods and services across the board. This situation poses a challenge for the Indian economy, especially for the lower and middle-income groups who are already grappling with inflation and rising costs of living.

Furthermore, the government faces pressure to manage these hikes while balancing the need for revenue from fuel taxes. As the global scenario remains volatile, it is essential for policymakers to explore alternative energy sources and strategies to mitigate the impact of such price fluctuations on the economy and the daily lives of citizens.
