Galgotias University Faces Backlash Over Robotic Dog
Galgotias University found itself at the center of controversy during the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, leading to its officials vacating their stall. The issue arose from the display of a robotic dog named "Orion," which the university presented as part of its AI initiative. However, it was quickly revealed that this robot was actually a Chinese-made Unitree Go2, sparking significant backlash from online critics.
Officials from the Indian government, concerned about the integrity of the summit, emphasized the need for genuine exhibitions. IT Secretary S Krishnan stated that the government didn’t want any controversy, urging against plagiarism and misinformation. The message was clear: the spotlight should be on authentic innovations rather than misleading representations.
In response to the criticism, Galgotias University officials maintained that they had not claimed to have invented the robotic dog. Dr. Nitin Kumar Gaur, the Registrar, clarified that the university had merely purchased the robot and that students were experimenting with it as part of their learning. He assured that they would respond appropriately upon receiving any official communication regarding the stall's status.
Professor Aishwarya Shrivastava from Galgotias University echoed this sentiment, stating that there was no indication of vacating their stall. She emphasized that the intent was to inspire students, not to mislead. The university’s statement reinforced that they aim to equip students with advanced technologies, rather than falsely claiming ownership of the robotic dog.
Another faculty member, Professor Neha Singh, admitted that the controversy stemmed from a lack of clear communication. She accepted responsibility for any misunderstandings, expressing that the goal was to encourage students to innovate and create their own technologies in the future. Singh reiterated that Galgotias University's mission is to foster future leaders in technology.
