Google Shuts Down Massive Chinese Proxy Network

02 Feb, 2026

In a major development, Google has dismantled one of the world's largest residential proxy networks, operated by a Chinese company named Ipidea. This network was silently utilizing over 9 million Android devices, turning them into rented internet gateways. For many users, this meant that their devices were unknowingly being used by hackers to route internet traffic, making it appear as if the hackers were browsing from those devices.

Google's Threat Intelligence Group took decisive action, using a U.S. federal court order to shut down dozens of websites and backend systems associated with Ipidea. The tech giant also removed hundreds of apps linked to this network from Android devices. This operation highlights a growing concern for users, especially in countries like India, where mobile and internet usage is rampant.

The Ipidea network provided access to various internet-connected devices, including PCs, smartphones, and even media players, allowing paying customers to surf the web anonymously. This anonymity, however, came at a cost, as hackers exploited the network in 2025. They found a vulnerability that allowed them to take control of millions of devices, forming a massive botnet named Kimwolf. This botnet was then used to execute denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, crippling numerous websites.

The Wall Street Journal reported that when they reached out to Ipidea before the crackdown, a spokesperson claimed the company was simply engaging in "relatively aggressive market expansion strategies." They admitted to conducting promotional activities in venues deemed inappropriate, such as hacker forums. Following the intervention from Google, the company appears to have ceased these practices.

While Google's decisive actions have significantly disrupted Ipidea's operations, it serves as a stark reminder for Android users to remain vigilant. When downloading free apps or games from unknown sources, users should carefully review app permissions. This situation emphasizes the importance of cybersecurity awareness, especially in a digitally connected landscape like India.
