Grand Magh Mela 2024 in Prayagraj: 12-15 Crore Pilgrims Expected

23 Nov, 2025

The Magh Mela in Prayagraj, one of the largest religious gatherings in India, is set to begin in January 2024. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that the event is expected to attract around 12-15 crore pilgrims over its duration of one-and-a-half months. This annual pilgrimage, which takes place during the Hindu month of Magh, is a significant occasion for devotees who come to bathe at the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.

During a recent review meeting, Adityanath emphasized the need for meticulous planning to ensure the event is organized with grandeur and provides a divine experience for the attendees. He pointed out that the holy bathing dates are coming earlier this year, with the first holy dip scheduled for Paush Purnima on January 3. Other important dates include Makar Sankranti on January 15, Mauni Amavasya on January 18, and more, culminating with Mahashivratri on February 15.

To accommodate the huge influx of pilgrims, extensive infrastructure is being developed across 800 hectares. The Mela will feature seven sectors to manage visitor flow, along with 42 designated parking zones to streamline vehicular movement. The Chief Minister assured that lessons learned from the recent Maha Kumbh would enhance the organization of the Magh Mela.

Various departments have been assigned specific responsibilities to ensure a smooth experience. The Irrigation Department will manage flood control and water supply, while the Power Corporation is tasked with installing electricity lines and substations. Additionally, the Public Works Department is constructing pontoon bridges and laying down pathways to facilitate movement within the Mela.

Healthcare is another priority, with the state government establishing two hospitals, 12 Primary Health Centres, and deploying ambulances for emergency services. The Urban Development Department is focusing on sanitation by installing thousands of toilets and maintaining cleanliness throughout the event. Safety measures include setting up temporary police stations and fire stations to manage crowds and ensure security.

With around 3,800 buses planned to operate for the Mela, including State Transport Corporation buses and shuttle services within the grounds, transportation will be a key focus. The installation of AI-enabled CCTV cameras will aid in crowd monitoring and incident reporting, contributing to the overall safety of the event.

As preparations unfold, the anticipation for the Magh Mela continues to grow, with officials committed to creating a memorable experience for millions of devotees from across India.
