GST Simplification: New Tax Structure Ahead of Diwali
The Indian government plans to simplify the Goods and Services Tax (GST) by introducing a two-tier system with 5% and 18% tax slabs, expected to boost revenue significantly. Currently, the 18% slab brings in a massive 65% of GST collections, while the 5% slab contributes 7%. Under the new proposal, most goods in the 12% and 28% categories will shift to 5% or 18%, with only a few "sin goods" facing a higher 40% tax. This rationalization aims to enhance consumption and increase monthly GST revenues as the government targets a more efficient tax structure ahead of Diwali.
