Gunmen Attack Chinese Workers in Nigeria

07 Sep, 2025

In a troubling incident in Nigeria, gunmen attacked a convoy of security officials, resulting in the deaths of eight operatives and the kidnapping of Chinese workers. This attack occurred on a Friday in Edo state, where the Chinese nationals were employed by a local cement company, BUA Cement. The assault highlights the severe security challenges faced in the region.

A spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Afolabi Babawale, reported the details of the incident. He confirmed that four Chinese workers were kidnapped during the attack; however, they were later rescued. Sadly, one worker remains unaccounted for. The NSCDC also lost eight of its operatives during this violent encounter, and four others sustained serious injuries.

This incident is part of a larger trend in Nigeria, where armed attacks and kidnappings have surged over recent years. While many of these violent acts have primarily occurred in the northern regions, it is alarming to see such activities spreading to the south. Criminal gangs are increasingly targeting civilians for ransom, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.

The Nigerian government has been criticized for its inability to effectively combat these rising levels of violence and insecurity. Citizens are concerned about their safety as kidnappers operate with relative impunity. Reports suggest that the dynamics of crime are evolving, with these gangs becoming more organized and strategic in their operations.

As the situation develops, it underscores the need for stronger security measures and international cooperation to address the threats posed by such criminal groups. Local communities, as well as foreign nationals working in Nigeria, must be more vigilant and prepared for potential dangers. The recent attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria in terms of safety and security.
