Historic Milestone in Test Cricket: Latham and Conway Shine

13 Jan, 2026

Shubman Gill, the Indian Test captain, has once again captured the spotlight following a historic achievement by New Zealand's Tom Latham and Devon Conway in the 3rd Test against the West Indies. They made history by becoming the first opening pair in first-class cricket to score centuries in both innings of a single match, marking an impressive feat in the world of cricket.

This remarkable achievement is quite rare in Test cricket. In fact, it has only occurred four times before in the history of the game. The last occurrence was in 2024 when Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis accomplished this against Bangladesh. Notably, legendary players like Azhar Ali and Misbah-ul-Haq, as well as Ian and Greg Chappell, also achieved this milestone in years gone by.

The match itself saw New Zealand scoring a staggering 881 runs, their highest total in Test match history, surpassing the previous record of 874 against India in 1990. The combined first-wicket partnerships of both teams totaled 669 runs, setting a new record for the most runs scored by opening pairs in a Test match, beating the previous record of 577 runs set in Chennai back in 1956.

Latham and Conway not only set records but also became the first pair to achieve both a triple-century stand and a century stand within the same Test match. Earlier, in the second Test, they had already made headlines by scoring a combined 515 runs as an opening pair, breaking the previous record for openers in a Test. Devon Conway’s performance also placed him among the elite, making him only the 10th player in Test history to score a double-hundred and a century in the same match.

Shubman Gill's remarkable individual performance earlier this year at Edgbaston, where he scored 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, remains a benchmark for excellence. His total of 430 runs in that match is the second-highest in Test history, showcasing his immense talent and resilience.

In the context of Indian cricket, Gill’s achievements and those of Latham and Conway highlight the growing competitiveness and skill level in the sport. As cricket fans, we can look forward to more thrilling matches and record-breaking performances in the future.
