Honda and Nissan Discuss Merger to Tackle EV Market Challenges

Honda and Nissan are in early talks about a potential merger to stay competitive against rising EV makers like BYD and Tesla. In March, the Japanese car giants agreed to collaborate on EVs and deepened their ties in August by working on batteries and technology. A merger could face political challenges and job cuts in Japan, as well as complications with Nissan's alliance with Renault. While Nissan shares surged 20% and Mitsubishi's rose 13% after the news, Honda's dropped 2%. Together, the companies sold 7.4M vehicles in 2023 but are losing ground in China, which leads global EV sales.
