India Aims for Victory Against Afghanistan in CAFA Cup
India is gearing up for a crucial clash against Afghanistan in the CAFA Nations Cup, aiming for victory to secure their place in the play-offs. The match holds significant importance as the Blue Tigers seek to avenge their surprising defeat to Afghanistan in March 2024 during a FIFA World Cup qualifying round.
Under the guidance of head coach Khalid Jamil, India has had a mixed performance in the tournament so far, with one win against Tajikistan and a loss to Iran. Currently tied on points with Tajikistan, India needs a win to ensure progression to the next stage. A draw could also be sufficient if Iran manages to either win or draw against Tajikistan in the other group match.
Coach Jamil is focused solely on winning the match against Afghanistan, dismissing any thoughts of scenarios that could affect their progression. “We are not thinking of all such scenarios at this point. There is no point to it. We will go into the game looking for a win,” he stated. This mindset is crucial as the pressure mounts on the team to perform.
India’s last victory against Afghanistan came three years ago during the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, and historically, India holds an advantage, having won 13 out of their 22 encounters. However, Jamil is cautious, recognizing that Afghanistan is a competent side that will not make it easy for them. “Afghanistan are a good side, so we cannot take them lightly. They have a chance, and they will definitely play hard against us,” he said.
The absence of key defender Sandesh Jhingan due to injury adds to the challenges India faces. Jamil praised Jhingan’s bravery and leadership, highlighting the difficulty in replacing such a pivotal player. “We will definitely miss his presence. He’s a great motivator on and off the pitch,” Jamil added.
As the players prepare for this vital match, it’s essential for those with less game time to step up and give their all. With the stakes high, the Blue Tigers are determined to rise to the occasion and secure their place in the play-offs of the tournament.
