India is set to decide whether to impose restrictions on importing metallurgical coke, a key raw material in steelmaking.
The country’s Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) proposed quotas to limit annual imports to 2.85 million metric tons. This plan, aimed at protecting local met coke producers, comes after imports surged by over 61% in the past four years. Leading steelmakers like JSW Steel and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel have opposed the move, arguing it could affect steel production. The decision is expected shortly after consultations with the industry.
