India’s $6 Billion Submarine Project Delayed Due to Sea Trial Issues

India's $6 billion plan to build six submarines has faced a major setback after contractor complaints about sea trials.

The project, key to enhancing the Indian Navy’s strength against China, is delayed by at least a year. The delay also tests Prime Minister Modi’s defense policy, which promotes local manufacturing. German firm ThyssenKrupp and Indian partner Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, as well as Spanish company Navantia and private builder Larsen & Toubro, are competing for the contract. Objections raised during crucial field trials are stalling the process.
