India’s Bad Loans Drop to Lowest in 10 Years – RBI Report

Indian banks have achieved their lowest gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio in a decade, standing at 3.9% as of September 2023, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This is a significant improvement from 5% in March 2022 and 9.1% in 2019. The drop is attributed to improved recoveries, write-offs, and better credit discipline. Public sector banks saw their gross NPA ratio decline to 4.6%, while private banks reported 2.1%. RBI highlights strong credit growth and better asset quality as key factors driving this recovery.
