India's Bold UN Stand Against Pakistan

13 Jan, 2026

India recently made a powerful statement at the United Nations, criticizing Pakistan for its internal political instability, particularly focusing on the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Harish Parvathaneni, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, addressed the Security Council and highlighted what he termed Pakistan's "unique way" of respecting the will of its people. This includes jailing political leaders and undermining democratic processes.

During his speech, Parvathaneni pointed out the contradictions in Pakistan's claims of democracy while it imprisons its former leaders and bans political parties. He specifically referenced Imran Khan's imprisonment since August 2023 and the alleged mistreatment he has faced in jail, reflecting a broader pattern of political repression in Pakistan.

The address also took a more serious turn as Parvathaneni condemned Pakistan for its role in sponsoring terrorism. He referenced the tragic Pahalgam attack in April 2025, where 26 innocent lives were lost due to terrorism linked to Pakistan. This incident underscored India's longstanding grievances regarding terrorism emanating from its neighbor.

In light of these events, India announced its decision to pause the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. Parvathaneni emphasized that this treaty was initially based on goodwill; however, Pakistan's repeated violations and support for terrorism have forced India to reconsider its stance. He stated that until Pakistan credibly ends its support for cross-border terrorism, India cannot continue to uphold the treaty.

This assertive stance by India at the UN reflects its commitment to regional security and justice. By calling out Pakistan's internal issues and its sponsorship of terrorism, India is not only defending its own interests but also advocating for a stable and secure South Asia.

As the situation evolves, it remains critical for both nations to address these pressing issues constructively. The international community will undoubtedly be watching how this geopolitical dynamic unfolds in the coming months.
