Starting April 1, 2023, India will implement new regulations that require all internet-connected CCTV cameras to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Electronics and Communications. This is a significant move aimed at enhancing the security and quality of surveillance technology in the country.

The new guidelines will primarily impact popular Chinese brands like Hikvision, TP-Link, and Dahua Technology, which have dominated the Indian CCTV market. These companies will now need to disclose detailed information about their products, including the origin of key components such as the system-on-chip (SoC) used in their cameras.

Despite the changes, reports indicate that the government will not seize existing internet-enabled CCTV cameras currently in use across India. Users, including homeowners and business owners, can continue using their cameras without interruption. However, this regulatory shift could potentially affect future software updates and after-sales services, leading to concerns among consumers.

As Chinese brands adjust their strategies to comply with these new regulations, Indian CCTV manufacturers are seizing the opportunity to expand their market share. Brands such as CP Plus, Prama, Quobo, Matrix, and Sparsh have increased their production and now account for nearly 80% of the market. This growth signifies a shift towards supporting local businesses and enhancing domestic manufacturing.

However, there are challenges ahead. The added costs of compliance with the new regulations, coupled with a reduced number of suppliers, are expected to raise prices for consumers. This price increase will be most noticeable in the mid to premium segments of the market, which may deter some buyers.

While they aim to enhance security and quality, consumers should prepare for potential changes in pricing and service availability.
