India's Challenge: ODI Series Against Australia Awaits

13 Sep, 2025

As India gears up to face Australia in an important ODI series ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup, the focus is on teamwork and strategy. Coach Amol Muzumdar has highlighted the need for a huge collective effort from the players. Over the past year, India's women's team has shown impressive form, winning 12 out of 14 ODIs, but the challenge against Australia is significant.

Historically, Australia has dominated the ODI format against India, winning 12 out of the last 13 encounters since Harmanpreet Kaur's remarkable 171* in the 2017 World Cup semifinal. Despite this, Muzumdar remains optimistic, acknowledging the importance of this series as a platform to test their preparations for the World Cup.

Muzumdar stated, "This is a real trailblazer for the World Cup. It is a very important series for us." He emphasized that while Australia has been a formidable force, the Indian team is concentrating on its own preparations and execution. The coach is keen on using this series to experiment with player combinations and strategies, keeping the World Cup in mind.

Reflecting on past performances, Muzumdar noted that India had some successes against Australia, including a Test match and a T20I victory. He expressed confidence in his team, stating that everyone is eager to face one of the top teams in the world. The upcoming matches are not just about results but also about building confidence and learning.

With the first ODI set for Mullanpur, followed by matches in Delhi, the atmosphere is expected to be charged. Most players, except captain Harmanpreet Kaur, will be experiencing the pressure of a home World Cup for the first time. However, Muzumdar believes that the team has adapted well to the pressures of international cricket, having played several home series recently.

India can draw encouragement from their recent success in England, where they won both ODI and T20I series. The coach highlighted the contributions of players like Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, who have been pivotal in achieving positive results. The bowling unit has also shown promise, with standout performances from players like Kranti Goud and Radha Yadav.

As India prepares for the series, they have held training camps in Bengaluru and Vizag, focusing on team bonding and strategy. With the return of Renuka Singh Thakur, who has recovered from injury, the team is looking to strengthen its bowling attack. Overall, the Indian squad is ready to put in a collective effort to challenge Australia and build momentum for the World Cup.
