India has made a remarkable stride in international trade by sending its first-ever air shipment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged limes to the United Kingdom. This historic event, announced by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, highlights the potential of Indian agricultural products on a global platform. The shipment includes the unique Indi Lime from Karnataka and Puliyankudi Lime from Tamil Nadu, both of which are celebrated for their distinctive quality and taste.
The initiative aims to empower local farmers by providing them with access to international markets. Goyal expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating that this milestone will create new opportunities for Indian farmers and strengthen the presence of Indian agricultural products abroad. He noted, “A major boost to our farmers!”
This export is not an isolated event; earlier this year, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) successfully shipped three metric tons of GI-tagged Swadeshi Lime from Karnataka to the United Arab Emirates. Such successes emphasize the growing recognition of India’s agricultural products globally.
The GI tag is crucial as it signifies that a product possesses qualities or a reputation due to its geographical origin. The Swadeshi Indi Lime is particularly noted for its strong aroma and unique flavor, making it a valuable addition to India’s export portfolio. The initiative not only promotes the specific limes but also reflects India’s broader strategy to enhance the visibility of its agricultural products in the international market.
Additionally, the export of Gharwali apples and apricots from Kargil to markets in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar further demonstrates India’s commitment to expanding its agricultural reach. These developments are expected to significantly benefit farmers and exporters alike.
During his recent visit to Brussels, Goyal also engaged in discussions with Maros Sefcovic, the EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, regarding ongoing negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This engagement underscores India’s commitment to strengthening trade ties with the European Union, aiming for a swift and mutually beneficial agreement.
As India continues to open new avenues for its agricultural products, the recent shipment of GI-tagged limes marks an important step towards empowering farmers and showcasing the richness of Indian agriculture on the world stage.
