India’s R&D Spending Falls Behind China’s Massive Budget
China's research and development spending of approximately $496 billion far exceeds India’s budget of under $100 billion for 2024. A report by NITI Aayog highlights the urgent need for India to rethink its R&D strategy, which currently lacks focus and yields limited commercial results. The report points to China's success due to disciplined execution and strong ties between industry and academia, particularly through its "Made in China 2025" initiative. India must adopt a bold ten-year vision and set up a National Industrial Strategy Task Force to ensure effective implementation. With R&D intensity at just 0.7% compared to China’s 2.68%, India risks falling behind in global technology.
