IndiGo Flight Disruptions: Crew Shortages Impacting Travel

04 Dec, 2025

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is currently grappling with a significant disruption in its flight operations. The airline has faced widespread delays and cancellations primarily due to crew shortages following the implementation of new crew rest and duty norms. Over 150 flights were cancelled recently, causing considerable dissatisfaction among passengers, many of whom took to social media to express their frustrations.

To address the chaos, IndiGo has announced “calibrated adjustments” to its flight schedule for the next 48 hours. These adjustments aim to stabilize operations in line with crew availability, even though details on specific changes have not been fully disclosed. The disruptions have prompted the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to launch an investigation into the situation, seeking clarity on the factors leading to the current operational challenges.

According to IndiGo, a combination of unforeseen operational challenges has compounded the disruptions. Factors such as minor technology glitches, adverse weather conditions, and increased congestion at airports have all contributed to the current state of affairs. The airline’s on-time performance (OTP) has drastically declined, with only 35% of its flights operating on time recently, a stark contrast to the usual performance that exceeds 80%.

The implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) has significantly impacted IndiGo’s crew rostering. These regulations have increased the weekly rest period for pilots and limited night landings, creating additional operational constraints. The airline has faced criticism for not adequately preparing for these changes, despite having prior notice.

Pilot associations have pointed fingers at IndiGo, claiming the airline's inadequate resource planning has resulted in these disruptions. The Federation of Indian Pilots has alleged that the situation reflects a long-standing issue with IndiGo’s manpower strategy, particularly in flight operations. The combination of high aircraft utilization and new regulations has made the airline more vulnerable to disruptions compared to its competitors.

As IndiGo works to manage this crisis, the effects on passengers are evident. Many travelers are left in limbo due to cancellations and delays, raising serious concerns about the reliability of air travel in India. With the DGCA closely monitoring the situation, it remains to be seen how IndiGo will navigate these challenges and restore confidence among its customers.
