IndiGo Hires Expert to Investigate Flight Disruptions

15 Dec, 2025

IndiGo, India's largest airline, has been facing significant challenges recently due to widespread flight disruptions. On a single day, over 1,600 flights were canceled, which prompted the airline to take immediate action. To address these issues, IndiGo has decided to engage John Illson, an experienced US-based aviation expert, to conduct an independent investigation into the root causes of these disruptions.

The decision comes as IndiGo’s board aims to ensure that such disruptions do not recur in the future. Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta emphasized the importance of involving an external expert to analyze the factors that contributed to the crisis. This independent review is expected to provide valuable insights that will guide the airline in implementing corrective measures.

In addition to IndiGo's own analysis, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated its own investigation. This inquiry panel was formed at the peak of the disruption and is tasked with submitting a report within 15 days. The scrutiny from both internal and external sources highlights the seriousness of the situation.

John Illson brings over 40 years of aviation experience to the table. His background includes significant roles within the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). His expertise in aviation safety and strategy will be crucial for IndiGo as it navigates this crisis.

The disruptions were primarily attributed to IndiGo's inadequate preparation for new crew rest and duty time limitations that were implemented on November 1. The airline did not have enough pilots to meet the new requirements, leading to widespread cancellations and operational chaos.

In response to the disruptions, the DGCA granted IndiGo temporary exemptions from certain night operation rules for its Airbus A320 pilots, allowing the airline some flexibility to stabilize its operations. This support emphasizes the regulatory body's commitment to ensuring safety while allowing airlines to recover from operational setbacks.

As the airline moves forward, it acknowledges that the disruptions were largely due to misjudgments in planning and implementation of the new regulations. The board has stated that it was involved in the process and received necessary information about the changes in crew rest rules. However, the effectiveness of the board's actions leading up to the crisis has been questioned by some aviation experts.

Ultimately, IndiGo aims to restore normalcy in its operations and regain passenger trust as it works to implement the recommendations from the upcoming expert review. The airline's willingness to engage external expertise reflects a proactive approach to managing its operational challenges.
