Inspiring Journey of Safeena Husain

16 Mar, 2026

Safeena Husain has made headlines as one of Time's 2026 Women of the Year. Her journey from a challenging childhood in Delhi to becoming an advocate for girls' education is truly inspiring. Growing up in a one-room janta flat, Safeena faced numerous hardships, including her parents' divorce and her stepfather's alcoholism. However, it was in the pages of books that she found solace and a sense of escape.

Initially, Safeena struggled with reading in English, but she persevered, starting with simpler stories like those of Enid Blyton and Nancy Drew. As her literary journey progressed, she delved into the works of Oscar Wilde and G.B. Shaw during high school. It was during a talk at Oxford that she realized the importance of sharing her own voice, as she had long been defined by others' narratives.

Her decision to write about gender and education was not an easy one. She knew that she could either delve into dense academic discussions or share compelling stories from her life and the lives of others. Safeena chose the latter, wanting to highlight the reality of girls' education in India. Contrary to the belief that the issue is resolved, she emphasizes that girls still face significant barriers to education and equality.

Safeena's book is structured in three parts: the world of girls, the beginning of the movement, and the call to action. She consciously decided not to focus solely on her traumatic childhood. Instead, she aims to inspire and motivate others to understand the ongoing struggles faced by girls, emphasizing that they deserve better opportunities.

The energy and motivation within her team have shifted dramatically since the book's conception. Safeena feels a renewed sense of responsibility to drive change and spread awareness about the importance of girls' education. She understands that true progress will only be achieved when every girl in India can pursue their dreams without the constraints of societal norms.

Through her work, Safeena Husain continues to inspire many, proving that the journey for girls’ education is far from over. Her story is a reminder that every individual has a role to play in ensuring that education is accessible to all, paving the way for a brighter future.
