iPhone 18 Pro: Under-Display Face ID Features Leaked
Apple is on the brink of a technological breakthrough with its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, as it reportedly tests the capability of Face ID sensors to function beneath the device's display. This innovation could redefine user experience, especially in markets like India, where smartphone users seek the latest advancements.
According to leaks from Chinese social media, Apple is experimenting with a novel display design that incorporates a "spliced micro-transparent glass" layer. This layer is crucial for allowing the infrared sensors from the TrueDepth camera to scan a user's face without interference from the OLED screen. If successful, this could mean a future where iPhones have completely notch-free displays, enhancing their aesthetic appeal.
The technology is still in its testing phase, with Apple focused on ensuring that the Face ID system can accurately map facial features for secure authentication. While Apple has not officially confirmed these developments, suppliers have reportedly been urged to expedite preparations for production. This hints that the feature may be closer to realization than initially thought.
Industry predictions suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro, along with its Pro Max variant, is expected to launch in 2026. Afterward, Apple may introduce the standard iPhone 18 model, which might not include the under-display Face ID system. Furthermore, the much-anticipated iPhone Fold is rumored to forgo Face ID entirely, indicating a shift in design philosophy.
As Apple moves towards under-display sensors, questions arise about the future of its Dynamic Island feature. Current reports suggest that even if Face ID components shift under the screen, the front camera may still require a small cutout. Some leaks indicate that the camera could be repositioned to a corner, while others believe that Dynamic Island will remain but in a reduced size.
Despite any design changes, Apple is expected to maintain the core functionality of Dynamic Island. Recently, the company expanded Live Activities— the software feature powering Dynamic Island— to iPadOS and macOS, indicating its commitment to integrating real-time app interactions across its ecosystem.
