The Irish Data Protection Commission has fined Meta €91 million ($102 million) for password-security breaches affecting 36 million Facebook and Instagram users in the European Economic Area. The fine stems from Meta's failure to implement adequate security measures to protect user passwords, which were stored in a readable format on its internal systems since January 2019. The regulator criticized Meta for delaying its notification of the issue, which was only reported in March 2019. In response, Meta stated that it quickly resolved the issue and emphasized that there is no evidence of password misuse. This fine reflects ongoing scrutiny of major tech firms by European regulators.
