ISRO's Heavyweight Success: BlueBird-2 Launch

13 Jan, 2026

ISRO has made headlines once again with the launch of the Bluebird Block-2 spacecraft, marking a significant milestone in India’s space endeavors. The launch occurred on Wednesday at 8:55 AM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, using the powerful LVM3-M6 rocket, affectionately dubbed the ‘Baahubali’ of rockets.

The Bluebird Block-2 is not just any satellite; it is the heaviest payload ever launched by ISRO, weighing an impressive 6,100 kg. This achievement puts ISRO on the global map, showcasing its growing capabilities in space technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the scientists at ISRO, stating that this launch represents a significant step toward an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

The mission is also noteworthy as it is part of a commercial agreement between ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), and the US-based AST SpaceMobile. The goal of this mission is to establish a high-speed cellular broadband network that connects directly to smartphones around the world. This network will support 4G and 5G services, enabling voice and video calls, messaging, streaming, and data services globally.

The LVM3 rocket, standing at 43.5 meters tall, is a three-stage vehicle equipped with advanced technology, including a cryogenic engine developed by ISRO. It also features two solid rocket boosters that provide the necessary thrust for lift-off. These boosters were crafted by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, further emphasizing ISRO’s commitment to innovation and excellence.

Previously, the LVM3 rocket has successfully launched several important missions, including Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3. With this recent launch, ISRO continues to build on its legacy of success, demonstrating its strength and capabilities in the ever-evolving field of space exploration.

The successful placement of the Bluebird Block-2 into orbit not only marks a proud moment for India but also highlights the collaborative efforts in advancing global communication technology. As India continues to soar in the world of space, this launch serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of its scientists and engineers.
