Jacob Bethell: Youngest Ashes Centurion Since 2006
Jacob Bethell has made headlines in the cricketing world by becoming the youngest batter since 2006 to score a century in the Ashes series. At only 22 years old, he showcased remarkable skill and determination during the final innings of England's tour at the Sydney Cricket Ground. This achievement marks him as one of the youngest players in the history of this iconic rivalry.
Bethell, stepping in for the out-of-form Ollie Pope, surpassed his previous best score of 96 to achieve his maiden Test century in just 162 balls. His landmark century came with a powerful shot through wide long-on, making him the second youngest batter to record an Ashes century in the 21st century. The only younger player to have achieved this feat was former England captain, who scored a century at Perth in 2006 at age 21 years and 357 days.
The ongoing Test match is significant for Bethell, as it is his fifth appearance at the No. 3 batting position. His century also signifies a breakthrough for England, as he is the first No. 3 batter to score an Ashes century in 14 years, following Jonathan Trott. Since 2001, only Michael Vaughan and Mark Butcher have scored centuries from the No. 3 position in the Ashes.
Bethell's journey to this historic moment was influenced by his experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He credited his stint in the IPL for helping him handle the pressure of his Ashes debut. In the Melbourne Test, he contributed 40 runs, aiding England in chasing down 175 runs to secure their first victory in Australia in over 14 years.
Reflecting on his experience, Bethell expressed, “I was pretty nervous. Not so much with the people, just the occasion, I guess. But I’ve played over in India where it feels like there’s 160,000 people watching. This atmosphere was incredible and it was nice to get a win and contribute.” His IPL experience, though limited to two games, instilled confidence in him for high-pressure situations.
In a match against Chennai Super Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bethell scored 55 off 33 balls, further demonstrating his potential. As he continues to make strides in his career, Bethell's achievements serve as an inspiring tale for aspiring cricketers, particularly in India, where cricket is more than a sport, it is a passion.
