Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will step down as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in September, ending his three-year term.
His decision comes after declining public support, driven by rising prices and political scandals. The LDP will soon choose a successor who will inherit challenges like increasing living costs, geopolitical tensions, and the potential return of Donald Trump as US President. Kishida, Japan's eighth-longest-serving post-war leader, led the country out of the COVID pandemic and promoted policies aimed at boosting household incomes over corporate profits.
