Joshna Chinappa: India's Timeless Squash Champion

At 38, Joshna Chinappa continues to defy age in the world of Indian squash. Despite facing a tough semi-final loss at the National Squash Championships, her remarkable spirit and determination shine through. An 18-time national champion, Joshna's journey has not been without its challenges. She underwent knee surgery after the 2023 Asian Games, and many of her contemporaries have long since retired. Yet, her love for the game keeps her going strong.
Representing India brings her immense pride, as she stated, “Playing for the country and winning medals has always motivated me.” Training at the Squash Academy in Chennai, she emphasizes the importance of listening to her body and adapting her training to suit her age. “What I could do in my 20s, I can’t do now,” she reflects, acknowledging the need for smarter training techniques.
Working with her former teammate Harinder Pal Sandhu, Joshna faces unique challenges. He describes their training sessions as demanding, adapting techniques to maintain her competitive edge against younger players. Together, they focus on play patterns and strategies to ensure she remains a formidable competitor on the court.
While she has participated in domestic tournaments, her international presence has been limited. The PSA tour, which involves constant travel, is less appealing now compared to her peak days. Yet, she notes that standards in international squash have risen significantly, with more Indian players emerging on the global stage. The growing interest in squash, especially with its inclusion in the 2028 LA Olympics, fuels her ambition further.
Amidst the excitement surrounding young talents like Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh, Joshna contemplates her future. While she acknowledges that three years until the Olympics is a long time, she remains focused on immediate goals, particularly the upcoming Asian Games. “It’s on my mind, and doubles could be a great option,” she says, demonstrating her realistic approach.
Ultimately, Joshna Chinappa embodies resilience and passion in Indian squash. Her journey serves as an inspiration, proving that age is not a barrier but a challenge that can be overcome with determination and the right mindset. With her eyes set on future competitions, Joshna continues to be a symbol of strength and perseverance in Indian sports.
