Knife-point Robbery in Chandigarh: Rising Concerns
A shocking incident occurred in Chandigarh when a 34-year-old man, Amresh Kumar, was robbed at knifepoint near the railway track close to the Ramdarbar temple. The incident took place around 2:30 pm when Kumar was on his way to work in the Phase-2 Industrial Area. As he approached the railway track, two youths intercepted him. One of them brandished a knife and threatened him while the other forcibly snatched his mobile phone.
The situation escalated when the assailants threatened to kill Kumar if he informed the police about the robbery. Kumar mentioned that the attackers referred to each other as “Guli” and “Kartik,” and expressed confidence that he could identify them if brought before him. Following his complaint, a case of snatching and criminal intimidation was registered, highlighting the increasing concerns regarding safety in urban areas.
This incident is not isolated. In a related case, the UT police arrested three youths for robbing a woman at knifepoint in Sector 47. The arrested individuals were identified as Bunty Singh, Abhijeet Kumar alias Golu, and Nitin Kumar alias Chintu, all from Ramdarbar. The robbery took place when the victim, Reshma, a 29-year-old domestic worker, was cycling to work and was intercepted by three youths on a scooter.
During this attack, one of the assailants pulled out a knife, threatening her while the others held her bicycle. They snatched her purse, which contained a mobile phone and important documents, and threatened her life if she contacted the police. Fortunately, the police acted quickly, arresting the suspects based on the victim's identification.
Following their arrest, the police recovered two knives and the stolen property, and further charges under the Arms Act were added. Bunty Singh was found to have a criminal history with previous robbery cases, while the other two had no prior records. These incidents raise urgent questions about public safety and the need for enhanced security measures in Chandigarh.
