Manoj Kothari, a celebrated figure in Indian billiards, has left us at the age of 67. He died due to a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. Kothari was not just a former world billiards champion but also a dedicated coach, shaping the future of cue sports in India.

Kothari first rose to fame in 1990 when he won the IBSF World Billiards Championship, a feat that established India’s presence on the global billiards stage. His skill and determination were further showcased when he clinched the World Doubles Billiards Championship in 1997, demonstrating his versatility as an athlete.

After transitioning from playing to coaching, Kothari took on the role of chief national coach in 2011, guiding the Indian billiards team for over a decade. During his tenure, he mentored numerous players, significantly influencing their careers. Among them is his son, Sourav Kothari, who followed in his father’s footsteps to become a world champion himself.

The bond between Manoj and Sourav was unique; Kothari was not just a father but also a mentor and strategist, instilling discipline and focus in his son. This father-son duo made history as the only pair of world champions in billiards, showcasing their family's dedication to the sport.

In recognition of his contributions to Indian sports, Kothari was awarded the Dhyan Chand Award in 2005, presented by former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. His passing is mourned by many in the billiards community, including the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India, which expressed deep condolences to his family.

Sourav Kothari highlighted his father’s immense influence, stating, “His selfless service produced many players who became champions. He was a living legend who inspired many lives.” The legacy of Manoj Kothari will undoubtedly continue through his son and the many players he coached.

As India reflects on Kothari’s contributions to cue sports, it is clear that his impact transcended titles. His passion for billiards and commitment to nurturing talent will always be remembered in the annals of Indian sports history.
